Raising kids in todays society can be a challenge. Society 'tells' kids how to look, what to play with, what girls should play with (barbies, princesses) and what boys should play with (cars, trucks, super heros). How do you block your children from all the 'stuff' that seems to reduce men and women to objects. In the stores, on tv, even clothing. It's everywhere.
Kids are born with so much love for themselves. Seriously. Their outlook only changes because of someone or something(s). I truly hope that my kids self esteem will be so high that no matter what they encounter they'll feel comfortable and confident being themselves and not conforming to society standards ever. I want them to have a sense of confidence and love for themselves aside from their physical looks. I want them to love and appreciate the human body, no matter what size or color. It's a pretty damn amazing thing! I don't ever want them to be embarrassed of their bodies.
I struggle with my self esteem. I won't lie, it's hard for me sometimes to bite my tongue when I'm not having a good day, sometimes I'll slip and say things like 'I feel so fat', 'I don't have any nice clothes' or 'I hate my hair'. Kids are sponges and hear and see everything. I want my kids to always feel beautiful. I want my girls to know that they never need make up and sexy clothes to be beautiful, and my son, likewise. A few years ago I made a commitment to myself to ditch all the fashion magazines. No more Cosmo to make me feel like a lesser woman. I am changing my perceptions about my body so that my kids can grow up with a positive, healthy body image, undistorted.
